RCIU 2 - Metro Ford Firefighters 0
The lads all knew the importance of this game and went out battled hard and succeeded in bringing home the three points.
Andrew Cockburn with both goals, clinical finishing, the second a wonderstike lob of the goalie. For the most part though we battled ourselves just as hard as MFFF. We played long when short was an option. Played short when we should have cleared. In short it was an ugly three points. The lesson from this game should be that even though we played poorly we are now a competitive force in this league even on an off night.
MOTM is a shared honour this week to Cobes for potting two and Mark for saving at least two.
Next week hopefully Inter..
RCIU 0 - North Shore Selects 2
The Premier women finished up league play on Friday, January 16th, with a 2 - 0 loss to the visting North Shore Selects team. Once again, the ladies played well and in the case, the score was not indicative of the way the game went. In the first half, we limited our opponents to no shots on goal, while we test their keeper on several occasions. Candace Lovstad was outstanding anchoring the backline, particularly when the women moved to three-back system. Natalie Hirayama, who plays at UBC, played her first competitive game for the club and was solid in the midfield along wtih UBC standout, Caitlin Davie. Dani Wallander, the 19 year-old Swedish sensation formed a trio in the middle of the park which North Shore had a problem dealing with all game. The half ended 0 - 0. In the second half, RCIU turned up the pressure even more and had their opponents reeling after Stacey Little hit the crossbar from 18 yards out. Unfortunately, a defensive breakdown with 20 minutes to go, lead directly to the North Shore's first shot on goal and first goal of the match. RCIU pressed right away to equalize and were denied one of the most blatant penalties ever witnessed on a football pitch. Emily Chu was through on goal and was pollaxed from behind. The ref called a goal-kick when it should have been a penalty and a straight red card. He said the opponent hit the ball yet it ended up a goal kick. Shocking. After this, Caitlin Davie ripped a shot from 30 yards off the underside of the crossbar with Dana M putting the rebound over the goal. With numbers being pushed forward, the North Shore team capitalized on another RCIU giveaway in front of goal to score their second and put the game out of reach. Overall, the coaching staff was very pleased with the performance but obviously disappointed with result. The ladies start cup play on January 30th at 8:30 at Richmond High against Westside. RCIU 2 - Surrey United 1
A much better performance than the last time we played those guys and the 3 points are ours. Cockburn with a great run throught the 18 and a nicely slotted finish to make it 1-0 six minutes in. Good spells followed where we worked the ball very well outside, this resulted in some nice efforts on net set up by Robbie and lean. Second half was almost a carbon copy of the first, before the ten minute mark it was 2-0. The big target man for us seemed to have lulled them into believing he was having a nap in the box, when they booted the ball at him to stir him it deflected into the net off of his backside. Quality . The outsides again proved to be the best route to net with both Wally and Rammer having a go. They scored a late one with three minutes to go to make things a little tense, but we held on to take the points. Huge night for Beau who stood on his head and even managed a little showboat near the end. The BBQ unfortunately is a little sick. I will nurse it back to health before next Friday.
